Notice my dads 1954 Ford 3/4 ton pick-up truck. I have vivid memories of my dad one balmy evening after work (with still plenty of sun left) taking myself and several others straight up Rosecrans to the beach, of course we rode in the back. That ride to the beach was several years before this car project took over. One of my first experiences driving was also in that truck. My sister was driving, and then after asking or being offered the chance to drive my sister gave me the wheel. I drove in a field between a golf course and Aviation Blvd. At some point I hit a large pot hole and what I remember most vividly was the steering wheel taking on a life of its own, completely out of my control and my hands. No harm was done, and that's the story I'm sticking too! My father eventually sold the truck to Benny Rolland after mistakenly thinking that he had blown a head gasket (water in the oil)? In any event, Benny was quite pleased to find that the truck needed no major repair. Benny immediately painted the truck white and converted it into a Tow truck. At that time I happened to work for Benny at Benny's Service Center, a Mobil Gas Station on the corner of ____ and Rosecrans. I have plenty of other memories of riding with my dad, such as, to the beach to go fishing (I can still see the days catch strewn about on the front lawn in front of the kitchen), and going to the North American surplus store on Aviation Blvd., and picking up from a Salvage yard the engine that you can see in the back of my car, ... . As I recall my Dad after some haggling paid around $325 for the motor. I believe that we sold the Corvair engine that came with the car for about what I paid for the car itself(~$225).
